What are Subdomains? (Definition and Examples)

What is: Subdomain
Len Gable

The most common use-case of a subdomain is for creating testing or staging version of a website. You can install WordPress on your subdomain, and it will work as a completely separate installation from your main site. Often developers test new plugins and updates on a subdomain staging site before publishing on the live site.

The Domain Name System (DNS) has a tree structure or hierarchy, with each non-RR (resource record) node on the tree being a domain name. A subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain; the only domain that is not also a subdomain is the root domain.[1] For example, west.example.com and east.example.com/ are subdomains of the example.com domain, which in turn is a subdomain of the com top-level domain (TLD). A “subdomain” expresses relative dependence, not absolute dependence: for example, wikipedia.org comprises a subdomain of the org domain, and en.wikipedia.org comprises a subdomain of the domain wikipedia.org. In theory this subdivision can go 127 levels deep[2] (though that limit is not in any published RFC). Per RFC 1035, each DNS label can contain up to 63 characters, as long as the whole domain name does not exceed a total length of 255 characters, but in practice most domain registries limit at 253 characters.

(sub´´dō-mān´) (n.) Also called a child domain, a domain that is part of a larger domain name in DNS hierarchy. DNS hierarchy consists of the root-level domain at the top, underneath which are the top-level domains, followed by second-level domains and finally subdomains. For example, in the domain name webopedia.internet.com, “webopedia” is a subdomain of the larger second-level domain “internet.com.”

What Is a Conceptual Domain?
Concha Pappas

In Cognitive English Grammar (2007),  G. Radden and R. Dirven describe a conceptual domain as "the general field to which a category or frame belongs in a given situation. For example, a knife belongs to the domain of 'eating' when used for cutting bread on the breakfast table, but to the domain of 'fighting' when used as a weapon."

Alternatively referred to as a child domain, hostname, or leaf domain, a subdomain is a domain name with a prefix. For example, "www.computerhope.com" is the URL for Computer Hope and "www" is the subdomain. If we wanted to have an FQDN for a sub page or another external domain such as our help section, we would create "help.computerhope.com" as a subdomain.
