10 Things You Should Do When Inheriting a WordPress Site

I have just inherited a wp site for a B&B group that I’m a member of. I have checked out the .css files, tried to standardize the main page, but find it frustrating that I cannot access the html files. The problem is, that there is only one paragraph style, which restricts my ability to get a break [single line] and instead I’m restricted to [double line] break . Is there any way I can add other paragraph styles with the current .css stylesheet, or is there another way?

If you’re a developer, then it is highly recommended that you implement version control for the site. It is fairly easy to use GitHub or BitBucket. It is also recommended to create a staging site to ensure that you have a stable testing environment before pushing things live. Although this is recommended for all sites, it is a must if you’re working with a larger client.

Look for Unfamiliar File Names & Modified Dates
Browse through your install via FTP or a hosting control panel and look for any file names you don’t recognize. Telltale signs of a hack can include file names that are simply nonsensical gibberish. Open them up in a text editor (be sure to scan for viruses/malware before opening up on your local system) and check for any strange code that doesn’t look like it belongs.

Another recommended step is to hook your site up to a CDN service (Content Delivery Network). A CDN is a solution that takes the content from your site and stores it on a network of servers around the world. Then, when a visitor comes to your site, they get served from the location that’s nearest to them. Hence, they can see your site much quicker than they would otherwise.
